Located in Boulder, Colorado, the Boulder Wildland Fire Station stands as a testament to innovative design and durable construction, featuring DELTA®-VENT S, a high-performance air and water-resistive barrier (WRB). This 12,912 sq. ft. commercial fire station, completed in 2015, serves as the command center for Boulder County’s wildland firefighting operations. Designed by Allred & Associates and constructed by Symmetry Builders, Inc., with Bighorn Metalworks, Inc. as the subcontractor for DELTA®-VENT S, this project showcases the reliability and efficiency of DELTA®-VENT S in demanding environments. With a project value of $3.1 million, the station achieved LEED Silver certification, highlighting its commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.
Why DELTA®-VENT S Was Chosen
The Boulder Wildland Fire Station, situated between Sixmile and Boulder Reservoirs with the Rocky Mountains as its backdrop, faces intense environmental challenges, including strong winds and wind-driven rain. DELTA®-VENT S, a vapor-permeable air and water-resistive barrier, was selected for its exceptional durability and performance. Mechanically attached, this high-strength, tear-resistant membrane ensures robust protection against harsh weather conditions, power washing, and long-term wear. Its proven track record in Europe for over 30 years made it the ideal choice for this project, surpassing standard commercial wraps in both reliability and efficiency.
The station’s unique cylindrical design, inspired by agricultural grain silos, incorporates ribbed metal panels, rigid insulation, gypsum board, and storefront systems. The seams between the metal panels required a high-performance WRB, and DELTA®-VENT S delivered by providing superior air tightness and moisture management, critical for maintaining the building’s structural integrity and energy efficiency.
Architectural Design and Functionality
Designed to blend with the agrarian heritage of rural Colorado, the Boulder Wildland Fire Station features a silo-shaped structure with burnt red metal cladding, reflecting the region’s crop circle patterns and wedge-shaped aesthetic. The station is part of an existing Firefighting Regional Training Facility, with a circular perimeter access road enhancing its rural aesthetic.
The interior prioritizes firefighters’ comfort and operational needs. The back half of the cylindrical structure houses firefighting apparatus and equipment, while the front half includes:
- A full kitchen and dining area
- A fitness room
- Offices and a conference room
- A large patio facing the Rocky Mountains
- Four bunkrooms to accommodate firefighters during major wildfire events
This thoughtful design ensures the station serves as both a functional command center and a restorative space for firefighters.
Meeting LEED Silver Standards with DELTA®-VENT S
Achieving LEED Silver certification was a key requirement for the Boulder Wildland Fire Station. DELTA®-VENT S played a pivotal role in meeting these sustainability goals. As a vapor-permeable WRB, it allows moisture within the building enclosure to escape via diffusion, preventing mold and ensuring long-term durability. Its air-tight properties enhance energy efficiency, reducing heat loss and supporting the station’s eco-friendly design. By choosing DELTA®-VENT S, Allred & Associates ensured compliance with stringent environmental standards while maintaining structural performance.
Key Benefits of DELTA®-VENT S in This Project
- Durability: Withstands high winds and wind-driven rain common in the Rocky Mountain region.
- Tear Resistance: Mechanically attached without compromising integrity during installation or maintenance.
- Vapor Permeability: Allows moisture to escape, preventing mold and enhancing building longevity.
- Energy Efficiency: Contributes to LEED Silver certification through superior air tightness.
- Proven Performance: Trusted in Europe for over 30 years, ensuring reliability for commercial projects like the Boulder Wildland Fire Station.
